Years ago, it was believed that in order to have beautiful, healthy hair, one needed to brush their hair hundreds of times each day. That’s not too far off from the truth, since brushing hair moves oils from the scalp down to the ends of the hair strand. However, how you brush your hair plays a major part in making sure that instead of breaking your hair, you’re actually helping it. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to brush your hair the correct way.
First, you have to make sure you have the right tools. Choosing a brush is just as important as the technique you use to actually brush your hair. Use a wide, flat brush that has a wooden base or a comb that’s made of tortoise shell. Stay away from iron or rubber combs, as they can damage hair. Also important to remember is to make sure the bristles aren’t pointed, which could damage the scalp.
Before you move onto the correct technique for brushing, always remember to brush your hair when it’s dry – not wet. Wet hair is much weaker than dry hair, and you can accidentally break strands if you brush your hair when it’s wet or damp.
Next, use your brush or comb to make downward strokes beginning at the scalp and moving towards the end of the strands. Always brush in a downward motion.
Flip hair over head, and brush from the base of the neck towards the forehead. This is a great way to make sure you brush the bottom layers of hair, and can help give you some extra volume.
When you’re brushing your hair, make sure you don’t put too much pressure on the brush or comb. Being too rough could activate the sebaceous glands, which produce sebum oil. That could cause your hair to become too oily or greasy.
Lastly, take care of your hairbrush by regularly removing hair from it, and washing it lightly with warm water every month.
