The economy is recovering slowly, unemployment is going down, and things are starting to look up. Still, it never hurts to make a few extra bucks, right? One option that is rarely considered is selling your hair to a wigmaker. Wig-makers like Joseph Fleischer commonly buy hair for our natural-hair wigs, because they make much nicer hair-pieces than artificial hair. Still, there are a few things you should know before you chop off your locks and post them on ebay. Here’s our FAQ for selling your hair.

Length – The minimum length your hair needs to be is about 10 inches. Longer is better, of course, and you’ll get more money for longer hair, but nothing shorter than 10” will be sellable. There are a few reasons for this. Mainly, it’s because while your hair may look long all over, it’s actually all different lengths. Since wig-makers won’t be able to use every single strand of hair, you want enough of it of the right length to make a good wig. It also makes it easier to style wigs – the more hair there is to work with, the more options you have for the finished product.

Hair Care – If you’re planning to sell your hair, it needs to be in good condition. That means you need to treat it right by not treating it at all. That’s right, if you’ve treated your hair, you probably won’t be able to sell it. This includes dyes, bleaching, perms, straightening, and other common hair styling procedures. Mostly, this is because these procedures that make your hair look great in day-to-day use also end up damaging it. This damage makes it more brittle, decreases its lifespan, and limits how many future treatments the wig-maker or wig-owner can use on the hair. If you want to sell your hair, start fresh and don’t use any products on it.

Daily Maintenance – The way your hair looks plays a large part in whether anyone wants to buy it or not. More than simply not treating it poorly, you need to treat it well. Take vitamins that will increase your hair thickness like biotin and b-vitamins. Try not to wash your hair with shampoo every day. Finally, and this may exclude a lot of people, try not to smoke. Smokers’ hair smells like cigarettes, and it’s nearly impossible to get that smell out completely.
