How to Jump on the Denim Hair Trend

There’s been no shortage of hair color trends over the last year, from the “gray granny” look to fire engine red locks. But now, there’s a look that encompasses a whole range of color hues in an attempt to put a better label on the blue hair look. The trend, called “denim hair” covers hues from bright blue and violet to a low-key navy and silvery gray and supposedly mimics the changes in color that your favorite pair of denim sees from wash to wash.

Proponents of denim hair argue that this color trend is more low-maintenance than most because the color changes so much over time and with washes that it transitions well from a bold, bright hue to a softer washed out color that also looks great.

If you’re ready to jump on board the denim hair trend, here’s what you need to do:

  • Determine whether you want a light or dark look, as this will set the base for how your hair transitions over time. Some people are choosing to start with light blues the color of light denim. Darker hues will result in a darker shade as it fades.

  • Light blue hues are going to require a light color base to start. If you’re a light blonde, this won’t be a problem. However, if you have darker brown or black hair, this means that the colorist will probably have to lighten your base color through bleaching. Bleaching is extremely hard on hair, so keep that in mind.

  • Even though “denim hair” is a little easier to maintain than other colors, you’ll still need to take precautions to keep your locks in great shape. This means having a consistent hair conditioning routine and keeping damaging heat processes to a minimum to keep your hair strong and soft.
