There are hundreds of products on store shelves across the country that claim to treat dull, dry, or damaged hair. From oils to conditioners to powders and vitamins, all claim to be able to put the shine back in your locks. They also usually cost a ton, and there’s a lot of debate about whether many of them actually do anything. But don’t fret – there are lots of traditional home remedies that work just as well without costing a small fortune. Here are four of our favorites!
Olive Oil
From polishing wood to cleaning shoes and handbags to revitalizing dry skin to just plain being delicious, there is almost nothing that good olive can’t do. Warm up a little bit of olive oil (be careful that it’s not so hot that it burns you) and massage it into your hair and scalp. Cover completely, and leave in for 45 minutes to an hour. Then simply wash it out with shampoo. Not only will the vitamins in olive oil help your hair regain its shine, it will also improve the health of your scalp, and make sure new hair grows silky smooth and healthy.
Avocado
Another home remedy from the kitchen, avocado is rich in oils, minerals, and vitamins that can put a healthy luster back in your locks. Crush a ripe avocado, mix in one egg, and massage the mixture into your hair. Let it sit for a little while, then shampoo out. Do this weekly or monthly, depending on how dry and dull your hair looks, and you’ll be back to radiant hair in no time.
Apple Cider Vinegar
And yet one more deliciously simple way to put some shine back into your do. Apple cider vinegar, like olive oil, is one of those common household items with a ton of uses. For hair purposes, you want to dilute it into water at a 1:3 ratio. So for a quarter cup of apple cider vinegar, you’ll want 3/4ths of a cup of water. The resulting mixture is especially good for conditioning your hair after you’ve been swimming, and will wash out any salt or chlorine that may be left over to damage your hair.
Omega 3
If you’re looking for a long-term solution to dry or dull hair, you can’t beat Omega 3. The fatty acid is a common ingredient in special shampoos, conditioners, and supplements. The good news is you don’t have to go and load up on product to get your fix. Omega 3 is commonly found in many fish, and adding more seafood to the menu can be a simple and delicious way to boost your hair’s natural glow.
