At Joseph Fleischer, we recommend human hair wigs for our clients because of their high quality and durability. However, there are still a number of people who opt for a synthetic wig over a human hair wig.
Before you decide to buy a wig, though, here are four things you should know about synthetic wigs and why a human hair wig might give you more bang for your buck in the long run.
1. Hair color on synthetic wigs doesn’t always look natural. Because they’re made from synthetic fibers, the hair color on synthetic wigs comes from a box and can end up in a color that doesn’t look natural. Also, it’s much more difficult to re-color synthetic wigs. Human hair wigs, however, are already a natural hair color and usually have more dimension than synthetic versions. They can also be dyed much more easily than a synthetic wig.
2. Heat from curlers or blow dryers can ruin synthetic wigs. Synthetic fibers don’t stand up well to heat, so styling wigs with a blow dryer or curlers is a big no-no. Most synthetic wigs come already styled, so you’re stuck with one hairstyle until you get another wig. Human hair is much more versatile and you have more options for styling, since human hair fibers can stand up to heat better.
3. Synthetic fibers can be shiny and look unnatural. Because of the fibers used in synthetic wigs, the strands can be thicker and less natural looking than human hair fibers. They can also have a shininess that natural hair fibers don’t have.
4. Synthetic wigs are much less durable than human hair wigs. The average lifespan of a synthetic wig is 5-6 months, while a human hair wig can last up to 10 years with proper care and maintenance.
Human hair wigs offer a lot of benefits, and while the initial cost can be much higher than what you’d pay with a synthetic wig, the lifespan of a human hair wig can make it the more economical choice over the long haul.
